Five civil servants died in a motor accident along the Mwanza-Shinyanga highway at Mwigumbi village in Kishapu District, Shinyanga Region, on Saturday evening.

One of the front tyres of an over speeding Land Rover 110 they were travelling in suddenly burst, leading to the vehicle with six civil servants aboard rolling five times. Its driver and his four passengers were killed on the spot.

The civil servants were travelling from May Day celebrations held at regional level in Maswa District, also in Shinyanga Region. One of them had emerged the best worker in the region.

The Shinyanga regional medical officer, Dr Costa Mniko, named the deceased as the sub-treasury stock verifier, Mr Zakaria Miyumbo and sub-treasury accountants, Messrs Ntarugera Mboyogo and Charles Kasiri.

Others were a storekeeper with the regional Government Stores, Mr Ibrahim Kipengele, who emerged the overall best worker during the May Day celebrations, and the driver, Mr Juma Njoroge.

The condition of the sole survivor in the grisly accident, a senior accountant with the sub-treasury, Mr Deusdedit Mesu, was progressing well yesterday, the regional medical officer said.

Mr Mesu said at the Shinyanga regional hospital, where he was nursing his wounds yesterday, that the vehicle was at a speed of 120 kilometres when the front wheel tyre burst at around 6:30pm.
