7 in trouble over banned underwear

Mwanza. Police in the city are holding seven traders who were caught selling unhygienic under garments in a crackdown carried out in three major markets here.

The crackdown also targeted traders involved in selling used pairs of sox and other form of male and female garments, which health experts proved to contain fungus and other toxic substance of the human body.

Speaking to reporters here, the acting regional police commander, Mr Christopher Fuime, said that the under garments targeted were those earlier banned by the government after health experts found them to cause breast cancer, fungus and other skin-related diseases or infections.The traders wanted the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) to also involve wholesalers and importers, instead of focusing on retailers only.
