THE white-with-red stripe jerseys won by 20 Taifa Stars players caused a sensation in Mwanza yesterday during a brief ceremony at the Regional Bloc hall.
Some local fans here complained that the colours of the jerseys were likely to divide them, as they either represented Simba Sports Club or Britain's Manchester United team.
The players and their leaders yesterday were hosted to a colourful reception led by Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Dr James Alex Msekela.

Mwanza RC saves NCU vehicles from confiscation

MWANZA Regional Commissioner James Msekela was yesterday forced to cut short the reception of Taifa Stars here to rescue six vehicles of Nyanza Cooperative Union (1984) Limited (NCU) from confiscation following a court order.
It was all chaos at the NCU head quarters when Silas Lucas Isangi Court Brokers arrived to seize the vehicles. By the time Dr Msekela arrived at the scene of the incident NCU watchman Peter Odoyo, had already lost a front tooth following a severe beating from the court broker’s staff.

Licenses issued to allow cotton purchase in Mwanza

Government has approved licenses for twenty enterprises, allowing them to purchase cotton from Mwanza Region. However, three firms were denied permission.
Agricultural Advisor in the Regional Secretariat, Ndalo Kulwijila explained that the Simon Agency, Nsagali and Kahama Oil Mill were not allowed to buy cotton from Mwanza as they owed large sums of money to Secretary of the Private Schools Board in outstanding education levy.

Mind That Child:
A MEMBER of Parliament, Ms Amina Chifupa, railed in the National Assembly a few months ago that more and more young people were indulging in narcotic drug abuse and that the practice was wrecking their lives. She said drug addicts were now a societal menace.
The legislator said the society had a duty to stem the rot. It is the drug barons who should be stopped in their tracks if the vice is to be stemmed, she said. She said apprehending and jailing small-time drug peddlers was proper but this would never end the problem.
Apart from stoning on narcotic drugs, children are sent by the kingpins of the diabolical trade on peddling errands. They are called “red herrings” in the parlance of the underworld. Children look naïve, so their help comes handy to drug barons. They are also not easily suspected by police.

A LETTER FROM NAMIBIA
FAR away from home, the press helped me learn President Jakaya Kikwete would tour Mwanza Region. He toured the region. Mwanza was in my mind again: the home of cotton, fresh fish, cattle rearing and gold mining. Yes, cotton is also affectionately referred to as white gold. Mwanza city is competing with Dar es Salaam with mushrooming business ventures.
But all said, Mwanza Region is yet to become one of Tanzania's productive centres it should have been by now.
I followed carefully the reports on the president's tour and, I have the liberty to say the region still lacks initiatives to harness the great potentials hidden in cotton production, fish and cattle industries. The president may have said this in different words.

SPORTS NEWS: JK to grace Senegal-Stars tie

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete is scheduled to lead thousands of Tanzanians to cheer the national team, Taifa Stars, when they play Senegal on June 2 in a return match at CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza.
The Minister for Information, Culture and Sports, Muhammed Seif Khatib, disclosed this to ‘Radio One’ in a special interview yesterday.
He called on the people in Mwanza and surrounding areas to join the president in encouraging the boys to win the game.

Nairobi B side take on Arusha in the first match of the East and Central African Inter-cities basketball championships on Wednesday.
The tournament tips off at the Nyayo National Stadium court, Nairobi, at 2.30pm.
Champions Nairobi A then face Mwanza in the second match of the day, according to draws held on Tuesday. Kampala women, Mwanza and Arusha were the first teams to arrive in the Kenyan capital for the region’s local governments’ basketball tournament.
