Nine Kenyans are among foreign golfers participating in an annual Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) Open golf tournament which began yesterday at the Lugalo T.P.D.F golf course.
TPDF`s Golf Captain, Joseph Kitani said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the tournament involving 18-hole stroke play is open for both men and women. He said the tournament would also feature Ugandans who are yet to arrive.
Kitani said foreigners would start to play today after the locals` meet. He named the participating Kenyans as Anthony Njoroge, Dick Omondi, Wambughu Waghichohi, Victor Onyango, Peter Muchiri, Martin Ombura, Walui Mwangi, Jesse Mwangi and Tonny Mwangi.
Local golfers have been drawn from ten regional clubs which are Moshi, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Mwanza and Iringa.

Shinyanga must mobilise for sustainable cattle industry

THE vast majority of Tanzania’s livestock keepers and peasants do not produce beyond subsistence level. Both the pastoralists and peasants depend on land and on the mercy of the skies to grow crops and keep livestock.
When the skies are generous the peasants’efforts are not wasted. They harvest enough food and cash crops and sell the surplus.Similarly, when the skies are kind, pasture for livestock abounds.
When there are insufficient or no seasonal rains crops fail and both the peasants and pastoralists become very desperate. Once drought strikes pastoralists become nomadic in search of water and pasture for their animals and very far from their homes.

KENYA and Tanzania will accommodate any excessive flights at Entebbe International Airport during Commonwealth meeting, MPs heard yesterday.
“Airports in Nairobi and Mwanza will be accessible to Uganda during the period of CHOGM,” Loi Kiryapawo, the chairperson of the committee on foreign affairs, said.
The initiative, she said, would demonstrate the unity of the countries.
Up to 5,000 visitors, including the Queen of England, are expected for the high profile meeting. Entebbe Airport is currently undergoing a major rehabilitation.

Security officers cushion New Mwatex management during JK`s tour

The management of New Mwatex Ltd of Mwanza narrowly escaped humiliation before President Jakaya Kikwete after more than 200 of its workers went on a strike and blocked the road where the president was scheduled to pass through so that they could have word with him on their problems.
According to reports, security officers including the police force, and the Ilemela and Nyamagana district commissioners, saved the day for the factory`s management as they kept away the striking workers from the presidential motorcade.
President Kikwete who was coming from Shinyanga was expected to arrive in Mwanza at about 7.30 in the evening.

Water Hyacinth Threat to EAC

East African economies are staring at yet another crisis in the face following the resurgence of the noxious water hyacinth weed in Lake Victoria.
The weed is already choking fishing activities and is threatening to paralyse transport operations in an affront that could dent performance of the two key sectors which play integral roles in the development of economies in the Lake Victoria basin.
A survey by the East African Business Week across the lake found that transport business had been greatly hampered and fishing activities substantially reduced after the weed formed a thick carpet on the water surface.

The trade fair targets consumers and producers of industrial products, services, machinery and technology.

He said it will serve as a venue to explore and make use of new trade and investments opportunities not only in the region, but also the greater Comesa and SADC regions.
