12,000 Jobs at stake

Tens of thousands of permanent and temporary jobs in the textiles subsector are at stake following an acute shortage of cotton currently facing the country, The Citizen has learnt. About 12,000 jobs could soon be lost in textile factories alone, while more than 5,000 seasonal jobs would be lost in ginneries in the cotton producing regions of Mwanza, Shinyanga and Mara.

As most factories remain with stocks of raw materials to last only a month or two, all the cotton harvested this season is reportedly sold out. This leaves textile mills with no option but to close down if they are not restocked with cotton.
