FORCE will not be used to evict thousands of residents from unsurveyed plots on Igogo, Bugando, Mabatini, Isamilo, Kitangiri and Kilimahewa hills in Mwanza, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Celine Kombani told the National Assembly here yesterday.
Ms Kombani was responding to Mkiwa Kimwanga (Special Seats-CUF), who had expressed her worries over the alleged government plans to remove by force about 40,000 residents from the hills.
However, Ms Kombani clarified that those who built their houses after 2003 would be asked to leave as the city, in collaboration with the local government, had outlawed further building of houses in the area.

Kiswahili dictionary software at drawing table

THE government envisages working closely with Microsoft to develop a software for a Kiswahili dictionary that will supplement two existing such dictionaries, which were meant for academic consumption rather than day-to-day usage.
The e-Government Advisor from the President's Office (Public Service Management), Mr David Sawe, said a Microsoft and free logging software available were laden with academic words, which were difficult for day-to-day usage.

Any solution to lake Victoria travel blues?

The company whose ship stalled two weeks ago on Lake Victoria igniting un precedented panic to passengers is strangely advising against use of any other ferry boats except its ships which it says are the most reliable under the rough conditions of the lake.
MV Victoria, one of the three-ship fleet of MSC, swayed uncontrollably for about two hours only 30 km to Mwanza port on its voyage from another lakeside port of Bukoba and again stalled hardly 100 metres before it could anchor at Mwanza North port on Saturday, sending alarms throughout Tanzania as wary passengers frantically kept their relatives worried as they stuck to their mobile phones.

Mwanza Zara Solar wins Ashden Award

The company, one of several winners of this year’s award, was announced here on Thursday during a function graced by former US Vice-President Al Gore.
Mr Al Gore congratulated each winner for their inspiring efforts to create lasting solutions to climate change.

SPORTS NEWS: No decision yet on Algiers games

WITH only two weeks to go before the start of All African Games in Algeria, the government is yet to decide on the budget for the country's delegation for the continent's tough games.
Tanzania plans to send teams for tennis, amateur boxing, judo, paralympics as well as track and field events in the tournament to start on July 5 in the capital, Algiers.
"Nothing has been decided so far. We are still holding talks and the matter will be settled soon", Deputy Director for Sports Development, Juliana Yasoda told the 'Daily News' yesterday.

Bukombe alienated from Lake zone water project

THE current phase of the Mwanza, Shinyanga, Kahama and Nzega water pipeline project, which envisages drawing water from Lake Victoria, will not serve Bukombe town because the area was not in the original plan and needs fresh funding, the National Assembly has been told.
The Minister for Water, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, who was answering a supplementary question in the House, said the 225bn/- pipeline is currently designed to serve only 54 villages and towns and cannot take more. He said Bukombe could be included in the second phase.

KILIMANJARO Music Awards winners will perform in Moshi on July 1 in the second leg of the countrywide promotional tour.
The tour manager, Oscar Shelukindo, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the tour will also cover Dodoma, Morogoro, Tanga, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Shinyanga and Mwanza regions.
Shelukindo, who is also a brand manager of Kilimanjaro beer, said the first leg started mid this month in Iringa and Ruvuma.
