1m jobs target on course

THE country's determination to create one million jobs by 2010 is well on course, the Minister for Labour, Employment and Youth Development, Mr John Chiligati, assured the House here yesterday.

"By June (this year) a total of 201,390 jobs were created," he said when presenting his ministry's expenditure estimates for 2007/08.

The agricultural sector led in the drive with total 112,134 jobs followed by the private sector 56,622 and the public sector 32,634. The minister was optimistic that the future portended brighter employment opportunities.

The government, he said, would continue to create an enabling environment for investors to boost the economy, which was also showing upward trend.

The national employment policy of 1997 was reviewed during last fiscal year, to meet the changing economic scenario, he informed the legislators.
