Shinyanga must mobilise for sustainable cattle industry

THE vast majority of Tanzania’s livestock keepers and peasants do not produce beyond subsistence level. Both the pastoralists and peasants depend on land and on the mercy of the skies to grow crops and keep livestock.

When the skies are generous the peasants’efforts are not wasted. They harvest enough food and cash crops and sell the surplus.Similarly, when the skies are kind, pasture for livestock abounds.

When there are insufficient or no seasonal rains crops fail and both the peasants and pastoralists become very desperate. Once drought strikes pastoralists become nomadic in search of water and pasture for their animals and very far from their homes.
