NCU fails to buy cotton

FINANCIALLY beleaguered Nyanza Co-operative Union (NCU), a former cotton industry giant, has declared inability to buy the crop in Mwanza Region as the season ends in two weeks' time.

The General Manager, Mr Abbas Mutabazi, said in a statement availed to the 'Daily News' yesterday that they could not buy cotton even from Ilemela, Nyamagana and Ukerewe districts where they had exclusive rights.

As a result, farmers in Ilemela and Nyamagana districts are now stranded with over 250 tonnes of cotton. It was not immediately clear how much cotton was also without a market on Ukerewe Island, where cotton farming in East Africa was first tested in the early 1990s.
