Isaka-Kigali railway shaping

CONSTRUCTION of the 450-km Isaka-Kigali railway will start soon after completion of the line’s survey, President Jakaya Kikwete said yesterday. The president, who is on an eight-day official tour of Shinyanga region, told a large rally in Bukombe district that the line’s survey was currently at an advanced stage.

However, it was not clear when it would be completed but construction of the railway was estimated to cost about 3.24bn/-.

President Kikwete said that the governments of Tanzania and Rwanda have agreed to build the railway line in order to boost trade and movement of people in the area. The railway also would be extended to Bujumbura, Burundi at a later stage.
