Beware! Hoodlums mislead children

From Daily News, Dar es Salaam
By SOSTHENES PAULO MWITA

Mind That Child:

A MEMBER of Parliament, Ms Amina Chifupa, railed in the National Assembly a few months ago that more and more young people were indulging in narcotic drug abuse and that the practice was wrecking their lives. She said drug addicts were now a societal menace.

The legislator said the society had a duty to stem the rot. It is the drug barons who should be stopped in their tracks if the vice is to be stemmed, she said. She said apprehending and jailing small-time drug peddlers was proper but this would never end the problem.

Apart from stoning on narcotic drugs, children are sent by the kingpins of the diabolical trade on peddling errands. They are called “red herrings” in the parlance of the underworld. Children look naïve, so their help comes handy to drug barons. They are also not easily suspected by police.

Use Mwanza regional business council fully

From Daily News, Dar es Salaam
By Kiangiosekazi Wa-Nyoka, Windhoek

A LETTER FROM NAMIBIA

FAR away from home, the press helped me learn President Jakaya Kikwete would tour Mwanza Region. He toured the region. Mwanza was in my mind again: the home of cotton, fresh fish, cattle rearing and gold mining. Yes, cotton is also affectionately referred to as white gold. Mwanza city is competing with Dar es Salaam with mushrooming business ventures.

But all said, Mwanza Region is yet to become one of Tanzania's productive centres it should have been by now.

I followed carefully the reports on the president's tour and, I have the liberty to say the region still lacks initiatives to harness the great potentials hidden in cotton production, fish and cattle industries. The president may have said this in different words.

Nyakalilo road might be a tip of the iceberg

From Daily News, Dar es Salaam

Editor's Comment

ROADS are described metaphorically as the veins of the national economy because of the role they play in linking producers and consumers.

Roads help producers transfer commodities or goods they have produced to markets where they are accessed by consumers. People from one region who take products to markets in another region generally make friends in the host region. Sometimes they establish business partnerships. So roads do not only serve one function of making our people access markets but they also integrate markets in our country and facilitate interaction between our people. Such interaction strengthens national unity and solidarity with each other.

In Tanzania a majority of our people live in rural areas and their livelihood is tightly tied to the activities they do on the land. Roads, their presence or absence, have a lot to do with promoting or undermining the quality of life of our people in rural Tanzania.

Uganda explores Dar option to solve diesel crisis

From The East African, Nairobi, KENYA
By BENON HERBERT OLUKA

The Ugandan government has resolved to import additional fuel through Tanzania after problems with Kenya’s Mombasa-Eldoret oil pipeline caused a diesel shortage and higher pump prices.

The decision comes after President Yoweri Museveni accused the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) of worsening the crisis by asking Ugandan oil firms to pay deposits on any fuel loads they collect from Mombasa.

In a statement announcing the decision, Uganda’s Energy and Mineral Development Minister Daudi Migereko, however, concluded that fuel imports through Tanzania will cost more due to the lack of an oil pipeline from Dar-es-Salaam and the need to use both road and water transport.
