Kikwete halts land grabbing

PRESIDENT Jakaya Kikwete yesterday ordered the Mwanza City Council to stop grabbing land and farms for surveying without compensation and giving priority to former owners for allocation of some of the plots.

Speaking shortly after laying the foundation stone for the construction of a major bus terminal at Nyegezi on the outskirts of the city, Mr Kikwete said the local authorities had powers to acquire land but not without compensation to owners.

"Take care of this modern bus terminal, lest it becomes filthy in six months only," said the president. He stressed that tenders for renting the 54 stalls at the terminal should be very transparent.
